How safe is is laser tattoo removal? And does it remove the tattoo 100%?
When it comes to removing tattoos, laser tattoo removal is the only method the FDA approves of. It is the safest and most effective when compared to other methods (dermabrasion, creams, chemical peels, etc.).
To ensure the best results, we recommend allowing more time between sessions (usually 8 or 10 weeks) so that the area can heal properly. The more time there is for the body to remove the ink, the less chance of causing scar tissue. Scar tissue interferes with laser energy getting through and, therefore, reduces the ability to remove all the ink.
Now, to address the 100% issue, assuming the question means 100% visible. Our scientific understanding includes the ink exploding, causing it to separate in multiple directions. We believe some of this ink is still present at future treatments and is driven deeper into the body. So, the real questions become: How does the immune system remove the broken up ink? Does it remove all of it? If so, in what period of time? Which parts of the immune system do this? Are there any foods or herbs or vitamins helpful or required as co-factors? Are there any factors occurring that affect the immune system (e.g., diseases, medicines and foods) and as a result, cause it to slow down the ink removal process?
The answers to these questions are too detailed to expand upon here, but they are very relevant to the issues. They are part of the advanced tattoo removal protocol that we teach to patients.

If your provider is well-trained and experienced and understands skin physiology, the procedure is safe. A good laser, such as the Astanza, can treat all colors. Bear in mind that the laser activates the ink molecules (exlpodes) and it is your body that removes the ink from the skin (macrophages). We have strict after care protocols that enhance the fading and stimulate the skin to keep pulling out the ink and also maintain health skin. If the skin becomes thickened or scarred by poor treatments, it makes it difficult for the laser to penetrate. Seek a medical office rather than a tattoo parlor or spa setting. 100% is possible, but ink type, depth, color density, skin health, patient compliance with after care recommendations, and lifestyle all contribute to the outcome. No one can guarantee this.

Laser tattoo removal is an effective and safe method of tattoo removal. Most clients do not develop any complications and get satisfactory results meaning most or all of the ink clears.
There are many factors that impact tattoo removal. A persons skin type, their general health and immune health, age and location of the tattoo, how deep the ink is applied into the skin, post treatment care, and time between sessions are all factors that impact removal.
There are risks associated with the procedure such as hypopigmenting, hyperpigmenting, scaring, incomplete removal of the tattoo, textural changes in the skin, infection, etc.
While there is no guarantee that a person will achieve complete removal, most clients experience significant fading and are satisfied with their results.
There may be a residual shadow following laser removal, but not everyone experiences this.
During your consultation, your health professional should inform you of all the potential outcomes, risks and benefits, and hopefully show you pictures of client outcomes with a similar skin type as yours, so you will have a realistic expectation of how laser tattoo removal may be for you.
