Laser resurfacing is much different than microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion removes the upper 10 microns of the skin (1/100th of
an inch). Laser resurfacing can remove anywhere from 30 to 300 microns
(3/100ths to 3/10ths of an inch) depending on the type used, CO2,
Erbium, fractional or otherwise. Microdermabraision has no downtime and
can make your skin feel refreshed and soft. Laser resurfacing can have
anywhere from a few days to a few weeks of recovery and take years off
your appearance.
Chemical peels are unique because some act like microdermabrasion
(Jessner peels) and others act like laser resurfacing (phenol peels).
Chemical peels offer a wide variety of results depending on the
downtime. For no downtime chemical peels don't expect much.
The bottom line is that the best choice for you depends on the issue you
are trying to resolve. For very deep acne scars and deep wrinkles, CO2
or phenol peels may be your only option, whereas if you just need to get
rid of some light brown or red acne scars, microdermabrasion may work
fine.
