There are a variety of facial vein treatments on the market today including electrosurgery that utilizes an electric current from a hand held needle. When applied to the blood vessel, the electric current destroys it.
Another treatment option is lasers that utilize high energy focused light. Vascular lasers target the hemoglobin in the blood destroying the blood vessel and leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed.
And finally, there is what is called intense pulsed light therapy that is very similar to a laser, but uses broadband light instead of focused light. The broadband light destroys the blood vessel and also doesn’t harm the surrounding tissue and there is less purpura.
In most cases no anesthesia is needed, but there may be some discomfort. Bruising and swelling may occur after IPL or PDL treatment, and small scabs and swelling may be seen after laser treatment.
