Laser Tattoo Removal: What is the Process?

There are many different kinds of people who choose to get body art, rather than just the stereotypical bikers and criminals. As interesting and expressive as body art can be, it can also become a source of annoyance or embarrassment for some people, depending on their individual situations.

These are the people who find the option of having laser tattoo removal done particularly appealing. Before medical technology had advanced to such a point, people who did not like their tattoos could either put a new tattoo over the old one to hide it, or just try to ignore it, which just led to more annoyance.

Laser tattoo removal is a procedure that is done in an outpatient facility, and by a dermatologist. When a tattoo is applied, the ink is injected into the upper layers of the skin, at which point the skin molecules bond with the ink. Laser tattoo removal involves using the laser heat to erase these molecules. The laser light works in conjunction with the heat to incite the production of new, clear skin tissue where the tattoo once was.

Laser tattoo removal is something that has to be done gradually, otherwise there is a significant chance that the tattooed area can become scarred. Several sessions will be needed over a period of a weeks to months, depending on the size and coloration (darker takes longer) of the tattoo. After each removal session, the area being treated will be bandaged, and the patient will be given care instructions.
