Black-Light Tattoos: How Do They Work?

Some people desire a tattoo but not the constant visibility. One discreet type of tattoo a person can get is a UV tattoo, or black-light tattoo, which is mostly visible under a black light or UV light. To the naked eye, in normal lighting, the skin appears normal with no ink at all.

How do black-light tattoos work?

When applying a black-light tattoo, the tattoo artist uses special ink that can only be seen under an ultraviolet light. Depending on the color of the ink, to the naked eye, in normal lighting, the skin appears normal with no ink at all. However, there are instances in which scarring from the tattoo machine during the application process is seen.

Though virtually invisible when under a black light, colors ranging from white to purple can be viewed. Colored ink is also available, and they are designed to appear in normal light like a regular tattoo but be more vibrant when under UV light.
