Cover Up
Looks like police and fire departments aren't the only ones being told to cover up their visible tattoos. Cities and school districts around the country are forcing their employees to cover up or find another job. The recent laws are intact because schools and cities are hoping to keep a clean image. The no-visible-tattoo policy has received much attention over the past few weeks with fire, military and police being obliged to either hide or remove their tattoos. There has also been quite the stir amongst celebs like Brad Pitt who are denouncing their disdain for these 'foolish' laws.
The growing concern is that with the advent of
tattoo removal technology, body ink has become considerably more popular in highly visible areas like the face, arms and neck. As laws become more stringent, it seems as though the removal industry may begin to boom.

Brad Pitt Denouncing Tattoo Ban
Brad Pitt, most notably recognized for his debonair looks and tumultuous sex life is now turning heads with angry statements about fireman and tattoos. Pitt wrote a letter to the Los Angeles Fire Department stating his disdain for the new tattoo bans placed on firemen in the LA department. Pitt actually was hoping to change the new ruling against visible tattoos on fireman. He stated that it was outlandish and preposterous that these men can save our lives, but are restricted from the luxury and freedom to have body ink.
He later noted that people in LA are not concerned about tattoos rather they care about the sanctity of the men saving their lives and homes. Tattoo laws and regulations seem to be making splashes in the media in recent weeks with laws forcing police and firemen to either get rid of their body art or covering it up.

Clean Slate Program
In a state plagued with gang violence, California is taking legal imitative to fight gang violence. In doing so, San Jose County is enforcing a law that offers gang-members a chance to get rid of their gang-related tattoos. The law is called the Clean Slate Program. The program allows men and women between 14-25 whom are affiliated with a gang an opportunity for a 'clean slate.' The program is headed by the Mayor and his gang task force, is offering these people free
tattoo removal treatments.
During this past year many cities and prisons have been enforcing rules much like this Clean Slate Program. In order to remove people from their affiliated gangs, one of the first steps is to get rid of their gang-promoting tattoos. Just last week police in New Jersey were told to remove or hide their visible tattoos, because residents were concerned it was promoting and mimicking that of nearby gangs.

Bite from the Tattoo Bug
Have you been bit by the tattoo bug? Some have an itch for an etch, while others have actually been bitten by the tattoo "superbug" MRSA (Methicillan Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). Most tattoo artists are cautious about infections or diseases like AIDS, Hepatitis and Tetanus, however the MRSA bug is a strain of Staph that has the possibility of being transferred via open wounds created by tattooing. US News and World Report released a report saying that these pesky 'bugs' should be treated promptly as they may lead to serious health problems.
As of now the FDA does not regulate the production of tattoo inks, so it is up to you as the tattoo-recipient to be wary of your artist, parlor and the ink he/she is using. If you're worried about being pierced thousands of times by a possibly bug ridden tattoo gun it may be a good idea to investigate and actively research where and who you get your body ink from. New Tattoo Laws
New Mexico state legislation passed a tattoo-regulation in 2007 and the deadline is approaching November 12. With only a month to go, tattoo artists and parlors must apply for a state license for tattooing and piercing their clientele. New Mexico is hoping these more stringent laws will safeguard public health and make sure body artists abide by proper health guidelines. Unlicensed tattoo artists using unaccredited products and tools may rouse infections in clients. The law also enforces all tattoo artists and shops to pay a $300 fee in addition to taking and passing a test regarding tattoo laws.
If tattoo artists fail to obtain the license in a timely fashion the cosmetology board is imposing even more severe protocols to make the lincensing process more difficult. The board is asking them to, "…complete a 40-hour theory course, a state board exam and provide proof of a 1,500-hour apprenticeship." So all New Mexico based body ink artisits should consider getting their application in before November 12th.

Dangers of Tattoo Ink
Twenty-somethings are lining up at tattoo parlors by the droves, but many without any knowledge of what their body ink can do to their health. Researchers released a
report today saying that the metals in tattoo ink may be cancer causing.
As opposed to tattooing of the past, today techniques, tools and chemicals have changed significantly. The report says,
"…many of today's tattoo inks contain metallic salts, oxides, sulphides and selenides, according to a study done by the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection on permanent tattoo inks in Europe. Many of the chemicals found were originally intended for use in writing, automobile paints and printer inks."
Due to the previous lack of evidence to investigate the health risks of tattoos, the FDA does not regulate the chemicals and products used in tattoo ink. But now chemists and researchers in both America and Europe are hoping to prove the risks associated with tattoo ink and gain the FDAs support in placing more stringent regulations on tattooing.
The report goes on to outline a number of other negative factors caused by tattoo ink, "In addition, the FDA does not require the ingredients of the inks to be disclosed. Because they are considered "trade secrets," tattoo inks may contain chemicals known to cause mutations, birth defects or cancer, though these symptoms may take years to appear."
As more information regarding tattoo health floods out, the masses of people getting tattoos may steadily decline. For more information about tattoo removal treatments, go to

Teen Tattoo Parties
Welsh Police have launched an investigation after a group of teens were found to have infected tattoos. The teens said they got the tattoos at a friend's house party and now regret their hasty decision. This is not your standard booze guzzling, fraternizing party, rather these 18-year-olds illegally hired a mobile tattoo artist to come cheaply ink them. If this is becoming the new "it" fad for teens, tattoo removal clinics and doctors have their hands full because this form of tattooing is prone to infection.
Mobile tattooists are illegal and possess serious health risks for customers. Police and health officials are urging anyone involved in such antics to get checked for possible infections immediately and to report the mobile tattoo artist to the authorities. Whether you are getting inked or getting it removed, cleanliness and safety are essential to your health. Many of these unlawful tattoo artists are amateurs purchasing their equipment off the Internet and not using tattoo parlor like maintenance or legitimate tools.
If you fell victim to one of these tattoo scandals or are just interested in learning about removal strategies and treatments go to
tattoohealth.org. We can also help you find a physician or tattoo removal clinic in your area.
