There was an interesting point made in an article about tattoos over at the
Christian Science Monitor. It posits the theory that getting a tattoo - an act which is generally considered to be rebellious - is fundamentally a conservative act. That's because tattoos are designed to be permanent which means that they effectively tell the world that you know who you are and that you're going to be this way for the rest of your life. Their potential permanence does not allow for changes in your beliefs or character; at least not if you get a tattoo that really means something to you.
This brings up the related theory that getting
laser tattoo removal is a liberal act. It basically says that you know that you've changed and you're willing to move on to the next phase of your life. You're not hanging on to the ways of the past because you know that they don't work for you anymore. Sure, you get tattoo removal for yourself. But looked at in this light it becomes something of a political act.
